July – September
Chasing the migration
River crossings are the classic image — herds fording the Mara River, with predators waiting. This usually happens in the northern Serengeti.
January – March
Calving season
Newborn wildebeest on the southern plains around Ndutu, and the predator action that follows them — a different, arguably more dramatic kind of migration viewing.
November – May
Avoiding crowds
The green season sees far fewer vehicles at each sighting, dramatic skies, and lush scenery — the tradeoff is a real chance of rain most days.
April – May (low season)
Traveling on a budget
Rates at many camps and lodges drop noticeably in the green season, without the parks themselves being any less real.
November – April
Best for birding
Migrant species are present alongside residents, and breeding plumage is at its best — a different calendar than the game-viewing advice above.

What's the single best month to visit?
There isn't one universal answer — it depends what you want. July–September for river crossings, January–March for calving season and newborns, or the green season (Nov–May) for fewer crowds and lower rates.
Is the dry season always better for game viewing?
Generally yes for ease of spotting animals, since vegetation is shorter and animals concentrate around remaining water. But the green season has its own strengths — the calving season specifically only happens then.
Can I see the migration year-round?
The migration itself is a continuous, year-round movement — what changes by month is where the herds are and what they're doing (crossing rivers, calving, or simply grazing across the plains).
