Which beach actually suits you
Zanzibar's coastline splits into two genuinely different experiences. The North Coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) has minimal tidal swing, so the beach stays swimmable all day. The East Coast (Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu, Matemwe, Michamvi) sees dramatic tides that pull the water far out twice a day — better for kitesurfing and beachcombing than a swim whenever you feel like it, but with some of the most striking scenery on the island.

North Coast
Nungwi
Nightlife, sunset views, all-day swimming
Zanzibar's busiest and most developed beach — minimal tide impact means you can swim any time of day, with the island's liveliest restaurant and bar scene right along the sand.
Kendwa
A quieter version of Nungwi
Just south of Nungwi, with the same reliable all-day swimming but a more resort-forward, laid-back feel — fewer crowds, still easy access to Nungwi's nightlife if you want it.

Zanzibar's kitesurfing capital — steady trade winds and a wide, shallow lagoon at low tide make it one of the best kitesurfing spots in East Africa, with a social, backpacker-friendly beach strip.

A quieter fishing and seaweed-farming village turned beach destination — the same big tides as Paje, but a slower, more local feel with far fewer tourists.
Bwejuu
A refined, quieter alternative to Paje
Just north of Paje, with the same lagoon and tide pattern but a noticeably calmer atmosphere — favored by travelers who want the East Coast's beauty without the kitesurf-town energy.
Matemwe
Snorkeling & diving
The closest beach base to Mnemba Atoll, one of Zanzibar's best snorkeling and diving sites — a quieter stretch of coast built around the reef rather than the kitesurfing scene further south.
Michamvi
A private, upscale peninsula escape
Occupying the tip of a peninsula, with a cluster of higher-end villas and resorts — genuinely quieter than the main East Coast strip, with water on three sides.

Which coast should I choose?
The North Coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) if you want to swim whenever you like without checking a tide chart, or want nightlife within reach. The East Coast if kitesurfing, a quieter atmosphere, or proximity to the best snorkeling matters more to you than all-day swimming.
Do the tides really matter that much?
Yes, on the East Coast especially — at low tide, the water can retreat several hundred meters, leaving a wide sand and seagrass flat rather than a swimmable beach. It's still beautiful, and great for walking, but it changes what a beach day actually looks like.

Which beach is best for families?
