Arusha, beyond the safari gateway
Most travelers pass through Arusha on the way to somewhere else — the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro. A city tour is a good use of a spare half-day either side of that trip: real markets, a genuine social enterprise, and a look at the gemstone found nowhere else on Earth but here, all within a short drive of each other in the city center. It's not a trip worth planning your whole itinerary around — but a good one to fold into a day you already have free.

Maasai, Kilombero & Ngaramtoni Markets
Three genuinely different markets, not one generic "market" stop. The Maasai Market is where curios, beadwork and African art concentrate — expect to bargain, as posted prices are a starting point, not a final one. Kilombero and Ngaramtoni are working markets for produce, fabric and everyday goods, where far fewer tourists go — a more honest look at how the city actually shops.

Shanga
"Shanga" is the Swahili word for bead. On the grounds of Arusha Coffee Lodge, more than 50 Tanzanian artisans who are deaf, mute or otherwise disabled work in glass-blowing, weaving, beadwork, Tinga Tinga painting and metalwork — visitors can watch the process, not just browse the finished shop.

Clock Tower & Uhuru Monument
Built in 1957, Arusha's Clock Tower is popularly known as the midpoint of the roughly 10,000km road journey between Cairo and Cape Town — a well-loved local claim, even though the true geographic midpoint sits further west, in central Congo. A short walk away, the Uhuru Monument marks Tanzania's 1961 independence, a quieter but genuinely significant city-center stop.
