Over 1,160 recorded species — one of Africa's richest birding countries.
Tanzania has recorded over 1,160 bird species — roughly 800 resident, with another 200 or so regular migrants passing through. That puts it among the richest birding destinations on the continent, not just a footnote to the Big Five. Around 29 species are found nowhere else on Earth, most of them concentrated in one specific mountain range most safari-goers never hear about.
Widespread across central Tanzania's dry acacia country
Common around the northern circuit's dry-country parks
Named for the German explorer, found around Lake Manyara and the Serengeti
A ground-dwelling species restricted to north-central Tanzania
Most of Tanzania's true endemics aren't found in the famous safari parks at all — they're restricted to the Eastern Arc Mountains, an ancient, isolated mountain chain running down the country's east side. The Amani Nature Reserve, in the East Usambara range, is especially rich in forest endemics and a genuine detour for a dedicated birder, not a safari add-on.
Raptors, ostrich and open-plains species alongside the game drives
Flamingos on the crater floor's soda lakes
One of the best single spots for flamingo flocks and waterbirds
Dry-country specialists, including several hornbill species
A strong southern-circuit birding park, less visited than the north
Riverine and wetland species along the Rufiji River
The Eastern Arc's core — forest endemics found nowhere else
Wetland and shoreline species distinct from the safari-park checklist
November to April, when migrant species are present alongside residents and the green season brings out breeding plumage. This is slightly counterintuitive if you're used to dry-season safari advice — the best birding window and the best game-viewing window don't fully overlap.
Yes — every northern circuit park has genuinely good birdlife alongside the mammals, so a standard game-drive itinerary will naturally turn up a long bird list. Dedicated birding usually means adding the Eastern Arc Mountains, which aren't on a typical safari route.
For a general trip, any experienced safari guide will point out and identify common species. For serious listing, especially in the Eastern Arc Mountains, a birding specialist guide makes a real difference.
Some, yes — several of the true endemics are restricted to small forest patches in the Eastern Arc Mountains and require a dedicated trip to that specific area, not just a stop on a normal safari.
