Visa, flight routing, and the transfer once you land.
Most travelers fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a short transfer from Arusha and the natural gateway for the northern circuit and Kilimanjaro. Here's what's actually involved — visas, flight routing, and the transfer once you land.
Most nationalities can enter Tanzania on an eVisa (applied for online in advance) or a visa-on-arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. An eVisa is worth doing ahead of time — it's the same cost, but avoids the arrival queue.
Apply online before you travel — recommended to save time on arrival.
Available for most nationalities at JRO, paid in cash or card at the airport.
Published fees are $50 for most nationalities, $100 for US citizens (multi-entry).
Requirements and fees can change — check your specific nationality's current requirement before you travel.
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) has direct intercontinental connections from Europe and the Middle East, but not from the Americas or Asia — those routes connect via a European or Middle Eastern hub. Precision Air is the main regional carrier linking JRO to other East African cities.
JRO sits roughly 32 miles (about 52 minutes' drive) from Arusha. We arrange private airport pickup as standard on every trip — you won't need to sort your own transfer.
See how the classic Tanzania safari itineraries are actually built, from a 3-day taster to the full circuit.
Either works, but the eVisa is worth doing in advance — same cost, no airport queue. Apply through Tanzania's official immigration portal, not a third-party site.
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for the northern circuit or Kilimanjaro — it's the closest to Arusha. Dar es Salaam (DAR) makes more sense if you're heading straight to the southern circuit or Zanzibar first.
Yes — private pickup from JRO is arranged as standard on every TanzaLux trip.
Transit rules vary by nationality and layover length — check your specific situation with Tanzania's immigration authority rather than assuming.
