Your Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit adventure begins with a morning transfer from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate, the western entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. After completing park registration and meeting your professional mountain crew, you continue to the trailhead before beginning your first hike through the lush montane rainforest. The trail winds through dense vegetation and tall mountain trees as you gradually gain elevation. The first day is designed to help you settle into a comfortable walking rhythm, with your guide setting a steady pace and allowing regular breaks for hydration, rest and photography. As you leave the lower slopes behind, the forest becomes increasingly quiet and the atmosphere more remote. Keep an eye out for birds and other signs of wildlife that can occasionally be encountered in the forest zone. After approximately 6 kilometres of hiking, you arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp at around 2,895 metres above sea level. Your mountain crew will prepare the camp while you relax and enjoy a freshly prepared meal. Your guide will brief you about the following day's trek towards the Shira Plateau and the changing mountain environment ahead. Tonight, surrounded by the Kilimanjaro rainforest, you begin your journey towards Uhuru Peak and the northern slopes of Africa's highest mountain.
After breakfast at Mti Mkubwa Camp, you continue your ascent through the upper rainforest before gradually entering Kilimanjaro's heath and moorland zone. The trail becomes more open as you gain elevation, with dense forest giving way to tall heather, grasses and volcanic vegetation. The changing landscape offers a clear sense of how Kilimanjaro's environment transforms with altitude. Your mountain guide will maintain a slow and comfortable pace, allowing regular breaks for hydration, rest and photography. As you climb higher, views begin to open across the surrounding slopes and towards the Shira Plateau. After several hours of hiking, you reach Shira 1 Camp at approximately 3,505 metres above sea level. This marks your first night in the Shira area and the beginning of the northern traverse that makes the Northern Circuit distinctive. Depending on weather conditions, you may enjoy views across the plateau towards Kibo, the highest volcanic cone of Mount Kilimanjaro. After arriving at camp, enjoy a freshly prepared meal, hydrate well and rest. Your guide will brief you about the following day's trek towards Moir Camp as you continue gaining altitude. Tonight, you settle into the high-altitude environment while gradually adapting to the changing conditions on Mount Kilimanjaro.
After breakfast at Shira 1 Camp, you continue eastwards across the spectacular Shira Plateau, leaving the lower mountain vegetation behind as the landscape becomes increasingly open and high-altitude. The trail passes through the distinctive heath and moorland environment of the Shira Plateau, with volcanic rock, highland grasses, wildflowers and giant senecio plants appearing along the route. On clear days, the open terrain provides impressive views towards Kibo and the surrounding mountain landscape. Your professional mountain guide will maintain a slow and comfortable pace, allowing regular breaks for hydration, rest and photography. The gradual increase in elevation is an important part of the acclimatisation process. As you continue eastwards, the route leaves the main Shira area and heads towards the quieter Moir Valley beneath the Lent Hills. This remote section of the mountain provides a more secluded wilderness experience and marks the beginning of the Northern Circuit's traverse towards the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. After approximately 11 kilometres of hiking, you arrive at Moir Hut at around 4,200 metres above sea level. Depending on weather and group condition, your guide may arrange a short acclimatisation walk around the surrounding area. After settling into camp, enjoy a freshly prepared meal, hydrate well and rest. Your guide will brief you about the following day's journey towards Buffalo Camp, when the route begins to skirt the northern slopes of Kibo. Tonight, you rest in the high-altitude wilderness as the Northern Circuit moves away from the Shira Plateau and deeper into the quieter northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.
After breakfast at Moir Hut, you leave the Shira Plateau behind and begin the traverse towards the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail starts with a moderately steep climb as you move out of the Moir Valley and around the slopes of the Lent Hills. This section provides a different perspective of Kilimanjaro, with fewer trekkers and a more remote mountain atmosphere. After the initial climb, the route crosses rugged volcanic terrain and gradually undulates across the northern side of the mountain. The landscape becomes increasingly open, with broad views across the plains stretching towards the Kenya–Tanzania border. Your professional mountain guide will maintain a steady pace, allowing regular breaks for hydration, rest and photography. Although today's overall elevation gain is limited, the combination of uneven volcanic terrain and altitude requires a controlled pace. As you continue eastwards, the route reaches Buffalo Camp at approximately 4,020 metres above sea level. The camp provides a peaceful overnight setting on the northern slopes, away from the busier southern routes. After arriving at camp, enjoy a freshly prepared meal and take time to rest and appreciate the expansive views across northern Tanzania. Your guide will brief you about the following day's trek towards Third Cave as the Northern Circuit continues around the northern slopes of Kibo. Tonight, you experience one of the quieter sections of the Kilimanjaro traverse, with the northern plains stretching out below the mountain.
After breakfast at Buffalo Camp, you continue eastwards along the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail follows a series of gentle rises and descents across the high-altitude northern landscape. Compared with the busier southern routes, this section offers a quieter mountain experience, with expansive views across the northern plains and towards the Kenya–Tanzania border. Your professional mountain guide will maintain a steady pace and allow regular breaks for hydration, rest and photography. Although the day's route is not as steep as some of the earlier sections, the altitude and rocky terrain make a controlled pace important. As you progress around the northern side of Kibo, the landscape remains open and rugged, with sparse vegetation and volcanic terrain dominating the surroundings. Weather permitting, you may have clear views towards the northern face of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding plains. After approximately 8 kilometres, you arrive at Third Cave Camp at around 3,930 metres above sea level. Once at camp, enjoy a freshly prepared meal, hydrate well and take time to rest. Your mountain crew will prepare the camp while your guide briefs you about the next stage of the route towards School Hut. With the summit now approaching, tonight provides an important opportunity to recover before the final high-altitude section of the Northern Circuit.
After breakfast at Third Cave Camp, you begin the gradual ascent towards School Hut, the high-altitude camp used as the overnight base before the summit attempt on the Northern Circuit. The trail continues across the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, with the landscape becoming increasingly rocky, barren and exposed as you approach the upper slopes of Kibo. Your mountain guide will maintain a slow and controlled pace, allowing regular breaks for hydration, rest and photography. The relatively short distance gives you time to conserve energy while gradually gaining altitude. As you approach School Hut, the summit glaciers and upper slopes of Kibo become increasingly prominent. Weather permitting, you may also enjoy expansive views across the northern side of the mountain and the plains below. Arrive at School Hut at approximately 4,750 metres above sea level. After settling into camp, enjoy a warm meal and spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the summit attempt. Your guide will conduct a detailed summit briefing covering the planned departure time, expected weather and trail conditions, clothing, headlamps, hydration, pacing and mountain safety procedures. You will have an early dinner before resting for as long as possible. The summit attempt begins during the night, so conserving your energy is essential. Tonight, you rest high on Mount Kilimanjaro with Uhuru Peak ahead. Tomorrow, you begin the final ascent towards the Roof of Africa.
After a short rest at School Hut, you wake during the night for the final ascent towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres above sea level. The climb begins in darkness as you follow the steep trail across volcanic terrain towards Gilman's Point on the crater rim. Your professional mountain guide will establish a slow and controlled pace, with regular short breaks to manage energy, hydration and the effects of high altitude. As dawn approaches, the first light begins to appear across the surrounding landscape. Reaching Gilman's Point at approximately 5,681 metres marks an important milestone on the summit route. From the crater rim, you continue along the upper slopes of Kibo towards Uhuru Peak. The final section remains demanding because of the altitude, cold and accumulated fatigue, so the mountain crew will closely monitor the group and adjust the pace and rest periods according to conditions. Reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest elevation in Africa. Weather permitting, take a moment to celebrate your achievement, take photographs and appreciate the extraordinary surroundings. After the summit, begin the descent towards School Hut and continue down towards the lower mountain. Depending on operational conditions, the route joins the Mweka descent towards Mweka Camp. The descent brings you rapidly back into a lower-altitude environment. Arrive at Mweka Camp at approximately 3,090 metres, where a warm meal and a well-earned rest await you. After one of the longest and most demanding days of the trek, take time to recover and prepare for the final descent to Mweka Gate tomorrow. Tonight, you rest in the rainforest zone knowing that you have completed the summit stage of your Northern Circuit journey.
After breakfast at Mweka Camp, you begin the final descent of your Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit climb. The trail leads through the lush montane rainforest as you gradually leave the high-altitude environment behind. After the demanding summit day, the lower elevation and greener surroundings create a noticeable change in the atmosphere of the mountain. Take your time on the descent and watch your footing, particularly on sections of the trail that may be wet, muddy or slippery after rainfall. Your professional mountain guide will maintain a comfortable pace and allow regular breaks as you make your way towards Mweka Gate. After approximately 10 kilometres, you reach Mweka Gate at around 1,650 metres above sea level. Here, the mountain team completes the required park exit formalities before you say goodbye to your guides and porters. Take a moment to reflect on the journey from the western slopes of Kilimanjaro, across the Shira Plateau and around the northern slopes of Kibo, before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. Meet your waiting vehicle at Mweka Gate for the transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, according to your travel arrangements. Your 8-day Mount Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit adventure ends here, marking the completion of an unforgettable journey across Africa's highest mountain.
