Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp – Kilimanjaro Rainforest Day Hike

Your Mount Kilimanjaro day hike begins with an early morning transfer from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi to Machame Gate, the starting point of the famous Machame Route. After completing the required Kilimanjaro National Park registration and meeting your professional mountain guide, you begin the hike into the lush montane rainforest on the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail climbs steadily beneath a dense canopy of indigenous trees, with moss-covered branches, ferns and changing forest vegetation creating a distinctly mountain environment. Your guide will maintain a steady pace and allow regular breaks for hydration, rest and photography. As you gain elevation, the forest gradually changes and the trail becomes more open. Depending on weather and trail conditions, you may encounter some of the birdlife and monkeys that inhabit Kilimanjaro's lower forest zone. After several hours of hiking, you reach the Machame Camp area at approximately 3,000 metres above sea level. This is the turnaround point for the day and provides time to rest, enjoy your picnic lunch and take in the mountain surroundings. After the break, you begin the descent along the same trail through the rainforest towards Machame Gate. The downhill section offers a different perspective of the forest and allows you to appreciate the landscape you crossed during the ascent. At Machame Gate, complete the required park exit procedures before meeting your vehicle for the return transfer to Arusha or Moshi. This private one-day Machame Route experience gives you the opportunity to walk on one of Mount Kilimanjaro's best-known trails and experience its rainforest environment without committing to a multi-day summit climb.

Tanzania visa
Most nationalities need a Tanzania visa, available on arrival or online in advance — the fee is not included in the trip price.
Tips & gratuities
Tipping your driver-guide and camp staff is customary but discretionary, and not included in the trip price.
