Your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a morning transfer from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate, the official starting point of the Marangu Route. After completing the required park registration and meeting your professional mountain crew, you begin your ascent through the lush montane rainforest on the southeastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail climbs gradually beneath tall trees and dense vegetation, creating a cool and peaceful introduction to the mountain. Your guide will establish a comfortable pace from the beginning, allowing regular breaks for hydration, rest and photography. As you gain elevation, the forest gradually changes and the trail becomes quieter. Depending on conditions, you may encounter some of the birdlife and smaller wildlife associated with Kilimanjaro's forest zone. After approximately 8 kilometres of hiking, you arrive at Mandara Hut at around 2,700 metres above sea level. Unlike the camping routes on Kilimanjaro, the Marangu Route uses mountain huts for overnight accommodation, giving this route its distinctive hut-to-hut character. After settling into your hut, enjoy a freshly prepared meal, hydrate well and take time to rest. Your guide will brief you about the following day's climb towards Horombo Hut and the changing mountain environment ahead. Tonight, surrounded by the Kilimanjaro rainforest, you settle into your first mountain hut and begin the journey towards Uhuru Peak.
After breakfast at Mandara Hut, you continue your ascent towards Horombo Hut, leaving the dense rainforest behind as the landscape gradually opens into Kilimanjaro's heath and moorland zone. The trail climbs steadily through changing vegetation, with the tall forest giving way to heather, giant vegetation and increasingly open mountain scenery. As you gain elevation, the distinctive volcanic peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi begin to dominate the surrounding landscape. Your guide will maintain a steady and comfortable pace, allowing regular breaks for hydration, rest and photography. The gradual ascent also gives your body time to adjust to the increasing altitude. After approximately 12 kilometres of hiking, you reach Horombo Hut at around 3,720 metres above sea level. Horombo is an important overnight stop on the Marangu Route and provides a comfortable base before the trek continues into the higher alpine environment. After settling into your hut, enjoy a freshly prepared meal, hydrate well and take time to rest. Your guide will brief you about the following day's acclimatisation hike around the Horombo area. The afternoon is kept relaxed so your body can recover and prepare for the higher elevations ahead. Weather permitting, the surrounding landscape offers impressive views towards Kibo and the rugged Mawenzi Peak. Tonight you stay at Horombo Hut, surrounded by the high-altitude scenery of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Today is dedicated to acclimatisation at Horombo Hut, giving your body additional time to adjust to the increasing altitude before the trek continues towards Kibo. After breakfast, you leave Horombo Hut for a gradual acclimatisation hike towards the lower slopes of Mawenzi Peak. The trail takes you through the distinctive heath and moorland landscape, with giant lobelias, heather and open mountain scenery surrounding the route. As you gain elevation, the views across the Kilimanjaro landscape become increasingly impressive. Kibo rises across the plateau while the rugged volcanic formations of Mawenzi create a dramatic backdrop. Your guide will set a comfortable pace and monitor how you are responding to the altitude. The purpose of today's hike is not to cover a long distance, but to gain additional elevation before returning to Horombo Hut for rest. After reaching the planned acclimatisation point, you descend back to Horombo Hut. Enjoy lunch, hydrate well and spend the afternoon resting. The remainder of the day is kept relaxed so your body can recover before tomorrow's longer ascent towards Kibo Hut. Your guide will also brief you on the changing conditions at higher altitude and prepare you for the summit stages ahead. Tonight you stay once again at Horombo Hut, surrounded by the high-altitude landscapes of Mount Kilimanjaro.
After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you begin the next stage of your Mount Kilimanjaro climb towards Kibo Hut, the final overnight stop before the summit attempt. The trail gradually leaves the heath and moorland behind and enters the high-altitude alpine desert. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you cross the broad saddle between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. This section of the Marangu Route is characterised by open volcanic terrain, rocky ground and wide mountain views. With the altitude increasing steadily, your guide will maintain a slow and controlled pace, allowing regular breaks for hydration, rest and photography. As you cross the high plateau, Kibo dominates the landscape ahead. The summit slopes become increasingly visible, giving you a clear sense that the final stage of the climb is approaching. After approximately 10 kilometres of hiking, you reach Kibo Hut at around 4,703 metres above sea level. After settling into the mountain hut, you will have an early meal and time to rest. Your guide will provide a detailed briefing for the summit attempt, including the expected schedule, clothing, hydration and safety procedures. Because the summit climb begins during the night, the afternoon and evening should be spent resting as much as possible. After an early dinner, prepare your personal equipment for the summit attempt and settle into the hut. The next stage will take you towards Gilman's Point, Stella Point and ultimately Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Your summit day begins in the early hours of the morning after a short rest at Kibo Hut. After a light meal and final equipment check, you begin the demanding ascent towards Uhuru Peak under the night sky. The trail climbs steadily across loose volcanic terrain towards Gilman's Point on the crater rim. Your guide will maintain a slow and controlled pace, with regular short breaks to manage the altitude and conserve energy. As dawn approaches, you reach the crater rim and continue towards Stella Point at approximately 5,739 metres. Weather permitting, the first light over the African landscape creates an unforgettable moment as the surrounding mountain slopes and distant plains begin to appear. From Stella Point, you continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak. The final section is gradual but demanding, and your mountain guide will support you throughout the ascent. At approximately 5,895 metres above sea level, you reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest elevation in Africa. Take time to celebrate your achievement, enjoy the views and capture photographs before beginning the descent. You then descend towards Kibo Hut before continuing down to Horombo Hut. The long descent provides a significant change in scenery as you move from the high alpine environment back towards the moorland zone. After arriving at Horombo Hut, enjoy a well-earned meal, rehydrate and rest. Your final day will take you down through the mountain rainforest to Marangu Gate.
After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you begin the final descent of your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure towards Marangu Gate. The trail takes you back through the heath and moorland before gradually entering the lush montane rainforest. As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the vegetation becomes increasingly dense, marking a dramatic transition from the high mountain environment. Your guide will maintain a comfortable downhill pace with regular breaks, allowing you to recover after the demanding summit day while enjoying the changing scenery along the trail. After approximately 20 kilometres of descent, you arrive at Marangu Gate at around 1,843 metres above sea level. Once the group completes the required park exit procedures, eligible climbers can receive their Kilimanjaro summit certificates. Your mountain crew will then assist with the final arrangements before you transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or onward to your next destination. After completing the Marangu Route and reaching Uhuru Peak, you leave Mount Kilimanjaro with unforgettable memories of the mountain, its changing landscapes and the achievement of standing on the Roof of Africa.
