This Tanzania visa guide helps you prepare for a safari, a beach stay, or a mountain trek. Start with your passport and travel purpose.

Your trip may lead to the Serengeti plains, the Ngorongoro Crater, or Zanzibar's shores. Good planning starts before the first game drive. A small error in a name, date, or visa choice can disrupt an otherwise well-planned journey.

Use this guide to understand the main visa options, fees, documents, and online steps. It also covers families, referral cases, border checks, and Zanzibar. You will find 20 short FAQs at the end.

Reviewed: 26 September 2026. Entry rules can change. This is a general travel guide. Check the linked government pages for your passport and trip before you pay or travel.

Tanzania Visa Planning at a Glance

Check your passport, visa category, and route before you start the form.

  • Eligibility: Some nationals are visa-exempt. Others need a visa or prior clearance.

  • Main route: Use the official online portal for an eVisa where applicable.

  • Holiday travel: The ordinary visa is the usual category for eligible tourists. US tourists use a multiple-entry visa.

  • Fees: The published ordinary visa fee is USD 50. Multiple entry is USD 100.

  • Time: Allow a margin beyond the stated processing period.

  • Route: Include your full mainland and island plan, plus any trips outside Tanzania.

  • Arrival: Carry the passport, grant notice, tickets, and documents that support your stay.

The official Tanzania eVisa portal is the place to start, continue, and track an online case. Save that link so you can return to the same site later.

Who Needs a Tanzania Visa?

The answer depends on your nationality, travel document, and reason for visiting.

Do not assume that everyone on the same trip has the same rules. A family or group may hold several types of passport. A residence card from one country does not make you a citizen of that country. Check the rules for the document you will use to enter Tanzania.

Use the official visa-exemption list and the current visa guidelines together. If lists conflict or your document is unusual, ask Immigration for a clear answer before travel.

There are three broad paths to check. You may qualify for visa-free entry. You may need a standard visa. Or your case may need special clearance before you travel. Being visa-exempt does not remove the need to meet the other entry conditions.

Choose the Right Visa for Your Trip

Choose the category that matches what you will do in Tanzania.

A Tanzania visa is not one permit for every purpose. A holiday, a work assignment, and a course of study are different cases. Read the government's visa-type guidance before choosing.

Ordinary Tourist Visa

The ordinary visa is the main single-entry option for eligible holiday visitors.

It is issued for up to 90 days. Your actual permission and dates still matter. Do not treat the maximum as an automatic grant in every case. A safari or beach booking does not give you the right to stay beyond the time allowed.

Multiple-Entry Visa

US passport holders visiting for tourism must use this category, even for one visit.

This visa can be valid for up to 12 months. Each stay is limited to a maximum of three months. A year of visa validity does not mean a year of continuous residence.

Other nationals need to meet the stated criteria for multiple entry. Do not select it only because it sounds more flexible. Ask for guidance if your planned route needs more than one entry.

Transit, Business, and Other Purposes

A transit visa is for passing through Tanzania to another country, not for a holiday.

The published transit limit is up to seven days. Business, study, research, and other purposes have their own conditions. If you plan paid work, volunteering, filming, or an internship, describe the full activity to the relevant authority. Extra permits may be needed.

For a mixed trip, write a simple list of what you will do. Share it with the authority when asking which route applies. Clear facts are much more useful than calling every visit tourism.

Tanzania Visa Fees and Other Costs

Budget for the government fee, then check for other costs linked to your route.

The published government fee schedule lists these main amounts in US dollars:

  • Ordinary single-entry visa: USD 50.

  • Multiple-entry visa: USD 100.

  • Business visa: USD 250.

  • Transit visa: USD 30.

  • Student and other categories: Check the fee for the specific category and length of stay.

Check the amount shown on the official portal before paying. A card issuer may add a foreign exchange or transaction charge. A service fee from a private agent is separate from the government fee. Keep these items apart when comparing costs.

Your Tanzania visa fee also does not cover every part of travel. Park fees, flights, hotel charges, and any required insurance are separate items. Build one clear trip budget so that entry costs are not confused with safari costs.

A fee receipt is proof of payment. It is not proof that a visa has been approved. Keep both the receipt and the final decision in your travel folder.

Tanzania Visa Document Checklist

Prepare clear documents and check every date before filling in the online form.

The UK government's entry advice states at least six months' passport validity from arrival and one blank page. The official Tanzania portal also requires six months' validity and a free visa page at submission. Check both points in time.

Use the official document requirements for your category. A useful preparation folder includes:

  • The passport bio-data page, with all text and edges clear.

  • A recent passport-style photo that meets the portal's rules.

  • Return travel details, or the permitted evidence for your case.

  • Your first hotel or host name, address, and contact details.

  • A route plan showing dates and places of stay.

  • Any required invitation, host, work, study, or family documents.

  • An email address you can access while away.

  • A valid payment method accepted by the portal.

For a safari with several camps, keep a full night-by-night plan nearby. It makes it easier to answer questions about your first address and later route. Ask your trip planner to confirm names and phone numbers rather than guessing them.

For a couple or family, use a separate folder for each person. Give files clear names. Check the document inside each file before upload. A neat filename does not help if it contains someone else's passport page.

Prepare a Clear Photo and Scan

Use a sharp image with a plain background and an unobstructed view of your face.

The portal's photo rules call for a colour JPG or JPEG no larger than 500 KB. Read the full current specifications before upload. Avoid shadows, filters, or a crop that cuts off part of your face. Follow any more specific limits shown in the form.

Open each scan at normal size and zoom in to check the text. Glare on a passport can hide a digit. Blurred dates can create needless follow-up. Do not alter the facts in an image to make them match a mistaken form entry.

Apply for a Tanzania eVisa Step by Step

Work through the official form carefully, save your reference, and wait for the decision.

The online visa system has separate options to start a case, continue one, and check its status. Use the same case reference when returning to an unfinished form.

  1. Check the address. Start from Tanzania Immigration's official website or its linked visa portal.

  2. Read the guidance. Confirm your category and the documents it needs before you begin.

  3. Create your case. Use an email inbox you control. Save the application ID and the details needed to return.

  4. Enter your identity. Copy your name, passport number, and dates from the passport.

  5. Add the trip. Use the actual arrival date, first destination, purpose, and host details.

  6. Upload the files. Match each document to the correct field and person.

  7. Review the whole form. Read it slowly before moving to payment and final submission.

  8. Complete the payment and submission. Follow the prompts and retain the confirmation.

  9. Track the result. Check the portal and your email for a decision or request for more information.

  10. Prepare for travel. Download the grant notice and check it against your passport and route.

Plan a quiet time to complete your Tanzania visa application. A rushed session at the airport is a poor place to check names and dates. Keep the passport open beside you and work through one traveller at a time.

If you need help reading a field, ask a precise question before you submit. A field labelled first destination is not a request for every stop. Your supporting route plan can show the full journey.

Timing and Referral Cases

Start early, and allow more time when your case needs special clearance.

The official entry guidance states ten days for normal visa processing. This is the published timeframe, not a promise for each case. It also tells online applicants to wait for approval before starting their journey.

For a standard holiday, leave a sensible margin for questions or delays. Check the correct application window and planned visa dates as well. Applying early should not mean using travel dates that no longer match the trip.

The referral-case guidance advises applying at least two months ahead. It also advises against paying for flights or reservations before approval. Refugee or stateless travel documents may require this route too.

For a referral case, seek advice before committing to fixed travel dates. Ask what host letter and supporting evidence are needed. Keep a clear proposed itinerary while the case is reviewed. Check the live country list because older lists can differ.

Do not assume that a friend with a different passport offers a useful timing comparison. A fast result for one person says little about a case with different documents or clearance needs.

Tanzania Visa on Arrival

Visa on arrival is available to eligible travellers, but it is not an option for everyone.

Check your nationality, travel document, and intended entry point against the official guidance. Do this before you rely on arrival processing. Prior-clearance cases cannot simply choose an arrival visa to avoid the advance process.

An online Tanzania visa lets you deal with much of the paperwork before the flight. You will still have border checks. If you use the arrival route, leave enough time for the process before a separate onward flight or a long transfer.

Ask about the current fee and payment method for the specific port. Do not rely on an old travel comment that says every desk accepts only cash or only cards. Keep your first night's address and your return travel details easy to reach.

Mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar, and Trips Across Borders

One valid Tanzania visa can cover both the mainland and Zanzibar during the same visit.

The official guidelines tell applicants to choose the first destination on the form. You do not need a second Tanzania visa just to add Zanzibar after a mainland safari. Still carry your passport for travel between the two.

Leaving for another country is a different question. The guidelines describe a limited return concession for valid ordinary visas after visits to East African countries. Confirm that it covers your exact route before relying on it. Do not treat it as a general right to leave for any country and return.

Write out each border crossing in order when asking for advice. For example, a flight into Tanzania, a road trip into Kenya, and a return flight from Tanzania involve two entries. State the dates and visa type so the answer addresses the real trip.

Zanzibar's Required Inbound Insurance

Zanzibar has a separate insurance requirement for visitors who fall within its rules.

The government notice on Zanzibar insurance sets out the ZIC requirement. It is separate from a Tanzania visa. Check the official Visit Zanzibar insurance portal before departure.

Current US government travel advice lists USD 44 per adult and USD 22 for children aged 3 to 17. The cover is for up to 92 days. Check the portal for the live price, age rules, and any exemptions.

An existing international policy does not replace the required ZIC cover. Keep the policy document and QR code ready if issued. Read the limits and exclusions too. A local entry policy may not cover every cost or activity in a long safari and mountain trip.

Children, Families, and Different Passports

Check each traveller's documents separately, including those of infants and children.

Where a visa is required, each child with a passport needs a separate application. Adding a child's name to a parent's form is not a substitute. Use the child's own photo, details, and passport scan for that case.

The Tanzanian Embassy's family-travel guidance calls for extra consent papers for minors travelling alone or with one parent or guardian. Check the exact documents with the embassy and airline for your circumstances. Carry proof of the relationship as appropriate.

Build a simple family checklist with one row per person. Mark the passport check, application ID, payment, decision, and document copy. This helps you spot one missing approval before the whole group reaches the airport.

Check every passport's expiry date. A child's passport may expire sooner than an adult expects. Renewing one late can also change the number linked to flights and forms. Resolve those details before starting the visa process where possible.

Health Documents and Travel Cover

Check health entry rules for your full route, including transit countries and long stopovers.

Yellow fever proof is not required of every visitor. The rule depends on where you arrive from and your transit history. Review CDC's Tanzania health guidance and current local health notices. Discuss your own route and health needs with a travel-health clinician.

Keep this check separate from your Tanzania visa application. A visa approval does not show that you meet every health condition. Save your flight route and any required health papers with your travel documents.

Choose travel cover that fits the whole trip. For a mountain climb, check the stated altitude and rescue cover. For a safari, read the medical evacuation terms. Also check cancellation, delays, and any current official travel advice that may affect cover.

Avoid Common Tanzania Visa Application Problems

Most preventable problems start with a mismatch between the form, passport, and travel plan.

  • Name errors: Copy the passport details carefully. Check given names and surname fields.

  • Wrong dates: Check the order of day, month, and year before submission.

  • Wrong category: Describe the actual purpose of the trip and get guidance when unsure.

  • Poor files: Use readable scans with no glare or missing edges.

  • Mixed family documents: Open each attachment to confirm the correct person.

  • Wrong arrival point: Use the first entry into Tanzania, not the final lodge or domestic airstrip.

  • Unclear host details: Ask the hotel or tour company for the correct address and contact.

  • Payment confusion: Check the receipt and portal status before paying again.

  • Lost reference: Save the application ID where you can find it without searching your whole inbox.

The portal terms say submitted forms cannot be edited normally. If a detail or date is wrong, contact Immigration with the case reference. Do not alter a grant notice or assume a fresh payment fixes the issue.

For a failed or uncertain payment, record the time and reference. Check the bank and official portal before trying again. Share only the details official support needs through its stated channel. Never send a card security code or one-time bank code by email.

Use the same care if a page will not load. Save your progress where possible. Try again through the official portal, using your existing case. Avoid creating several applications just because a confirmation email is slow.

Track the Decision and Prepare for Arrival

Use your application ID to track the case, then check the grant notice before travel.

The official portal offers a Visa Status page. Check your inbox and spam folder too. A payment email, draft ID, or submission receipt does not have the same meaning as an approval.

If the stated period has passed, use the support contact shown on the official site. Include a clear question and the case reference. Keep copies of replies so you can follow any instructions consistently.

Before leaving home, compare your approved Tanzania visa details with your passport. Save an offline copy and carry a printout. Keep the return ticket, route, first-night address, and any other required papers together.

At the border, answer questions clearly and show the documents requested. The officer makes the final entry decision. Check the stay granted in your passport or entry record before leaving the desk. Ask about anything unclear while it can be checked there.

Plan Your Trip with TanzaLux Safaris

A clear trip plan makes it easier to prepare accurate travel details and arrive with confidence.

TanzaLux Safaris plans safari, mountain, and beach journeys from Tanzania. Share your dates, interests, group size, and preferred pace. Ask your planner to confirm the arrival transfer, first stay, route, and local contact details for your booked trip.

Visa decisions belong to the authorities. A tour booking, host letter, or planner's help cannot guarantee approval. Check the visa timeline before making payments that cannot be recovered, especially if your case needs referral clearance.

Once your entry plans are clear, you can focus on the experience. Build enough time for wildlife, rest, and the journey between stops. A well-paced trip starts with a realistic arrival day.

Contact TanzaLux Safaris to plan your journey. Bring your travel dates and ideas, and shape the route around the holiday you want.

20 Tanzania Visa FAQs

These answers cover common travel questions. Check the official sources for the rules that apply to your own case.

1. Do I need a Tanzania visa for a safari holiday?

You need a visa unless your nationality and travel document qualify for an exemption.

Check the official lists for the passport you will use. Do not copy the rule for another person in your group. Refugee, stateless, and other special documents may need a different process.

2. Which visa should US tourists choose?

US passport holders visiting for a holiday must apply for the multiple-entry visa, even for a single trip.

The published fee is USD 100. The ordinary tourist category is not the correct choice for US holiday visitors. Read the current government guidance before selecting the category.

3. How much does a Tanzania visa cost?

The published fees are USD 50 for ordinary, USD 100 for multiple entry, USD 250 for business, and USD 30 for transit.

Check the final official amount for your case before payment. Bank charges, private service fees, and required insurance are separate costs.

4. Where can I apply for an eVisa online?

Apply through the official portal at visa.immigration.go.tz.

Use the link from Tanzania Immigration and check the address before entering personal details. The portal lets you start, continue, and track your case. Keep your case ID and access details safe.

5. How long does a Tanzania eVisa take?

Official guidance gives ten days for standard cases. Referral cases need more time.

Allow a margin for delays or extra questions. The stated period is not a guarantee for your case. Online applicants should wait for approval before starting the journey.

6. Can I get a Tanzania visa on arrival?

Eligible travellers can use visa on arrival at official entry points. Not every nationality or document qualifies.

Check the latest guidance for your case and planned port. A referral case needs advance clearance. Do not rely on a previous visitor with a different passport as proof of eligibility.

7. What is a referral visa case?

A referral case needs prior review or clearance before travel. It may depend on nationality or travel-document status.

Official advice is to apply at least two months ahead. Wait for approval before paying for bookings as directed by Immigration. Check the current list and required host papers.

8. How much validity does my passport need?

Plan for at least six months of validity from arrival and at least one unused visa page.

Check the official submission requirements too. If the passport will soon expire, sort that out early. A new passport changes details that may already appear in your bookings or visa case.

9. Do children need their own Tanzania visa?

Where a visa is required, each child with a passport needs a separate application.

Use the child's own details and photo. Check consent papers for travel with one parent, a guardian, or no parent. Confirm the requirements with the airline and relevant embassy before departure.

10. Do I need a return ticket?

Official guidance requires visitors to show return travel evidence, and standard applications call for a return ticket.

Referral applicants may use a proposed itinerary at the application stage where allowed. If your route ends in a different country, ask Immigration what evidence it accepts for your exact journey.

11. How long can I stay in Tanzania?

The ordinary visa is issued for up to 90 days. Your actual grant and entry permission control your stay.

For multiple entry, the maximum continuous stay is three months per visit. Check the dates at arrival. Visa validity and the length of each permitted stay are different things.

12. Do I need a separate visa for Zanzibar?

No second Tanzania visa is needed just to visit Zanzibar and the mainland on the same valid visit.

Select the first destination when filling in the form. Carry your passport between the mainland and island. Zanzibar's separate insurance requirement still needs attention.

13. Is Zanzibar insurance required if I already have travel cover?

The required ZIC inbound policy is separate. An international travel policy does not replace it.

Check the official Visit Zanzibar portal for eligibility, price, and age rules. Keep the issued documents ready. Retain wider travel cover if needed for your full route and activities.

14. Can I visit Kenya and then return to Tanzania?

Check the re-entry rules for your visa type and full route before booking.

Official guidance describes a return concession for valid ordinary visas after visits to East African countries. Confirm that it fits your circumstances. It is not a blanket rule for every international side trip.

15. Do all visitors need a yellow fever certificate?

No. The requirement depends on travel history, arrival country, and transit arrangements.

Check current official health guidance for every stop and seek advice from a travel-health clinician. A long layover can affect the rule. Do not use visa approval as proof that health checks are complete.

16. What if I make a mistake in my application?

Check the draft before submission. Once submitted, contact Immigration for guidance on errors.

Give the case reference and explain the mismatch clearly. Do not change the wording or dates on a grant notice yourself. If travel dates change, ask how that affects the approval.

17. What if my eVisa is delayed or refused?

Use the official status page and support contacts. A pending case is not an approval.

If refused, read the decision and seek guidance before submitting another case. Official entry guidance says rejected visa fees are not refunded. Avoid paying again without understanding what needs to change.

18. What should I do if payment fails or seems unclear?

Check the portal status and your bank record before attempting another payment.

Save the reference and error message. Contact official support or your bank through a verified channel. Do not send card security codes by email. A bank debit alone does not show that a visa was granted.

19. Can I extend my stay after arrival?

Ask Immigration about lawful options before your permitted stay expires.

Do not assume that an extension is automatic or available for your visa type. Keep the original expiry date in mind while seeking help. A changed flight or longer hotel booking does not extend permission to stay.

20. How can TanzaLux Safaris help with trip preparation?

TanzaLux Safaris can help you plan the route and confirm details for your booked journey.

Ask for your arrival plan, first-night address, and local contact. Keep responsibility for accurate visa details and check official rules. Only the authorities can decide a visa case or grant entry.
