The Ultimate 2026 Tanzania Entry Checklist: Visas, Mandatory Insurance, and Health Requirements

This Tanzania entry checklist helps you get ready for a safari or beach trip in 2026. Start with your passport and visa status. Then check which local cover you need, which health form to fill in and whether your route calls for proof of a vaccine.
Reviewed: 24 October 2026. This guide covers leisure travel and the rules in force on that date. Entry rules can change. Recheck the linked offices before you travel, especially if you change flights, transit countries or travel dates.
A smooth start to your trip begins at home. Keep the papers for each guest together, allow time for approvals and make sure your names and dates match. You can then focus on the safari ahead.
Your Tanzania entry checklist at a glance
Passport: check validity, a blank visa page and the travel document you will use.
Visa status: check whether your citizenship and passport need a visa, an exemption or prior referral approval.
Travel proof: keep your return or onward booking, trip plan and first lodge details ready.
Inbound insurance: use the named insurer for your first point of entry, unless a rule means you do not need to buy it.
Health declaration: check the current mainland or Zanzibar form for your route.
Yellow fever proof: review where you have been and where you transit, rather than judging by citizenship alone.
Personal health plan: arrange advice from your doctor, medicines and travel cover that fits your needs.
Offline copies: save approvals, key records and contact details where you can open them without mobile data.
Use this Tanzania entry checklist for every member of your party. One person's visa or insurance record does not show that another person may enter. Children and guests with different passports need their own checks.
Passport checks before you book
For your Tanzania entry checklist, plan for a passport valid for at least six months after arrival and at least one blank visa page. The UK government's entry guide sets out that rule for the day you enter. Tanzania Immigration also requires six months of passport life and an unused visa page when you apply.
Check the physical passport, not just a saved scan. Look at the expiry date, name and page space. If renewal is needed, allow time for it before you send travel forms. If a visa uses an old passport number, ask the visa office what to do.
Use the same passport details across your flights, visa form and insurance purchase. If you hold more than one citizenship, explain which passport you plan to use to the right offices when seeking advice. Do not assume that an approval linked to one passport transfers to another.
Add a final passport check to your Tanzania entry checklist after any renewal or name change. Ask the airline and issuing authority how to handle existing bookings or approvals before you travel.
Tanzania visa requirements: start with your nationality
Some guests are visa-exempt; others need a visa or referral clearance. Check the current Tanzania Immigration visa rules for your passport and visit purpose. A friend's recent airport experience is not a sound guide for someone with a different passport.
The Tanzanian Embassy in Washington also lists visa fees. For tourism, the listed ordinary visa fee is US$50. US passport holders travelling as tourists are directed to the multiple-entry visa, whose listed fee is US$100. These are visa fees, separate from insurance and your safari package. Confirm the category and amount in the system before payment.
The term shown on a visa does not mean you may stay for all of it. Read the grant notice and the stay allowed at entry. Your Tanzania entry checklist should record the dates you may stay and when each paper runs out.
How should you prepare a Tanzania eVisa application?
Open the form through Tanzania Immigration's website. Gather the papers requested for your category. Use clear scans and check the spellings, passport number, travel dates and first destination before you send the form.
Keep your form reference and the payment record. Then track the outcome through the portal. A payment receipt or a form you have sent is not the same as a visa grant. Download the approval when issued and read it carefully.
Every passport holder who needs a visa needs a form of their own. This includes children. Build that into your Tanzania entry checklist early. Do not leave a child's form until the adults' approvals have arrived.
Who needs referral approval?
Referral cases need advance clearance. Immigration advises applying at least two months before travel and waiting for approval before paying for travel you cannot refund. Check the current referral list; it can change. Do not rely on visa on arrival as a fallback for this category.
If you will leave soon and still have no visa grant, ask the visa office what to do. A tour operator can help clarify your trip plan, but it cannot grant a right to enter or promise when a visa will be ready. Keep that distinction clear as you plan.
Can you rely on a visa on arrival?
Visa on arrival is available to guests who qualify at named entry points, subject to Immigration rules. Not all guests qualify. Confirm your citizenship, passport type and visa category first. Apply in advance where that is the right route for you, rather than assuming every airport queue offers the same option.
For a trip to both the mainland and Zanzibar, Immigration's guide allows travel to both on the right Tanzania visa without buying a separate Zanzibar visa. Select the first destination accurately in the form. Cross-border trips to other countries need their own checks.
Keep a written reply from the right office for any unusual case in your Tanzania entry checklist. This is especially useful for a changed passport, revised arrival date or travel document other than an ordinary national passport.
Return tickets, lodge details and arrival documents
Keep proof of your return or onward journey ready for border checks. Also carry the first lodge's name, address and a reachable local contact. A short day-by-day trip plan helps keep all your arrival details consistent.
Ask your safari planner for the final version before you fill in forms that need accommodation details. If the lodge changes, check whether you need to update any record. Do not invent an address or use a property that has not been agreed.
In your Tanzania entry checklist, keep a folder for each guest and one shared trip plan. Label files clearly, such as visa grant, proof of cover and first-night lodge. This makes it easier to find the right paper at check-in.

Tanzania mandatory insurance: what changed in 2026?
Mainland inbound insurance took effect on 1 October 2026. The designated mainland insurer is the National Insurance Corporation, or NIC. Zanzibar uses the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, or ZIC. The Norwegian Embassy’s insurance update also explains the first-entry rule. Read the current ZIC notice dated 7 October 2026 when planning a trip that includes both places.
Mark the first point where you enter the country on your Tanzania entry checklist. The notice uses that point to name the firm you should buy cover from. The part of the trip that costs most does not decide which firm to use.
Mainland first: use the NIC inbound insurance portal, unless an exemption applies.
Zanzibar first: use the ZIC inbound insurance portal.
Both in one journey: the notice says a second mandatory policy is not required solely because the trip plan includes both.
An existing policy: check that it is in force and covers this journey, and retain the proof and QR code for verification.
For example, arriving at Kilimanjaro Airport before a later Zanzibar flight makes the mainland your first point of entry. Arriving internationally in Zanzibar before flying to Arusha reverses that order. Revisit this part of your Tanzania entry checklist if your airline reroutes you.
What does the US$44 mainland rule mean?
The NIC FAQ lists a premium in Tanzanian shillings equivalent to US$44 per person, with cover for up to 92 days for the dates shown on your proof of cover. It describes exemptions for foreign residents of EAC and SADC partner states. Confirm your status and required evidence with NIC if you may qualify.
Do not apply a mainland exemption automatically to Zanzibar. The ZIC notice says the island's own rules remain separate for those guests. Visa exemption, insurance exemption and residence status are different checks.
For Zanzibar travel insurance, ZIC's product page lists US$44 per adult and US$22 per child, with a listed regional rate. Check the portal for the correct category and final amount for each person. Do not assume a mainland child rate from Zanzibar's price list.
Add the quoted cost to your Tanzania entry checklist budget. The days of cover do not add days to your visa or allowed stay. Both your cover and your right to stay need to be in force.
What if you already bought ZIC insurance?
The October notice recognises valid ZIC policies fully paid before 1 October 2026 for the same insured journey, even when the trip begins on the mainland. Keep the existing proof and ask the insurer what to do if dates or route have changed. Do not cancel or buy a duplicate just because you read an older article.
The notice also addresses use of valid, unexpired cover on later entry during the period it covers. Read your own terms before planning a new trip. An expired or otherwise invalid policy needs a fresh decision from the insurer.
How should you buy and store proof?
Use the insurer link and check passport details and dates before payment. Save the issued proof, QR code and receipt. Make sure you can open the proof offline, and carry a printed copy if that helps your travel routine.
Finish this part of your Tanzania entry checklist before you travel where possible. If payment or issuance fails, contact the insurer through the help line on its own site. Keep a clear record of what happened rather than paying an unknown intermediary.
Does mandatory insurance replace your own travel policy?
Do not assume it covers every cost or activity you may face. Read what it pays, what it leaves out and how to claim. Ask about pre-existing conditions, trip cancellation, emergency transport for care and what you plan to do. For a mountain climb, check the right altitude and rescue terms specifically.
Your Tanzania entry checklist should include both proof of any required inbound cover and a review of your personal travel policy. Ask each firm how its cover applies and how to seek approval for care or evacuation. Keep the help line from the policy itself.
Do not assume a lodge's emergency plan is the same as your own insured evacuation benefit. Tell your planner about support you may need, while discussing health history and cover with your doctor and the firm that sells the cover.
Tanzania health requirements: forms and screening
The latest government travel advice reports extra health checks after the 17 October 2026 notice. It says guests must fill in the Traveller's Health Surveillance Form before you travel or on arrival. Mainland guests should use the AfyaMsafiri portal and follow the latest Port Health instructions.
Fill in the form honestly. Save the QR code or reference it gives you. Keep this separate from your visa grant and proof of cover. They serve different purposes. Add the correct health form to your Tanzania entry checklist rather than treating an insurance QR code as a health declaration.
Zanzibar has its own Ministry of Health guest portal and health guide. Check the declaration that applies to your route and recent travel. Do not assume a mainland form completes every island health process.
Expect health checks and allow time to follow staff instructions. If you become unwell before travel, seek medical advice and check with the airline before boarding. If your recent travel prompts extra follow-up, cooperate with the health team's steps.
Recheck this section of your Tanzania entry checklist just before you travel. Screening and outbreak-related steps can change quickly. Use current notices from Tanzania's Ministry of Health and your airline, rather than a saved COVID-era notice from years ago.
When is a yellow fever certificate required?
The need for a yellow fever certificate depends on your route. This recognised proof is often called the yellow card. Tanzania's mainland Ministry of Health guide requires it for arrivals from yellow fever risk countries and includes transit in such a country for 12 hours or more. Show your clinic and Port Health each stop. Include any stay outside the airport.
Do not decide from your home country alone. Tell the clinic if you will spend time in another African country first. This can change what you need. A changed connection can also change the question. Mark all transit points on your Tanzania entry checklist.
If you need the vaccine and your doctor says it is safe for you, allow time for the card to take effect. WHO's certificate guide states that the proof becomes valid 10 days after the first shot and remains valid for life. Carry the original recognised yellow card if the rule applies to you.
Age and health exemptions need careful review. If the vaccine is not safe for you, speak to an approved doctor. Ask Port Health what proof of an exemption it will accept. Do not assume that a casual letter or a note found online means you will be let in.
Keep vaccine advice separate from border rules in your Tanzania entry checklist. A vaccine may be advised for personal protection without being a universal entry condition. You may still need the card due to your route, even if the risk at your main stop is low.
Malaria, routine vaccines and medicines
Aim to see a travel doctor four to six weeks ahead, or as soon as possible if you will leave soon. NaTHNaC's Tanzania guide says the advice should fit your route, plans and health history. Ask the doctor to review routine shots and any travel shots you may need.
Malaria prevention belongs in your Tanzania entry checklist as part of your health plan. Risk exists in low-lying areas, including Zanzibar. A stay in a luxury camp does not remove it. Ask your doctor which medicine is right for you. Take it as told, for the full course.
Use bug spray as directed. Wear clothes that cover your arms and legs. Sleep in a screened room or use a bed net where needed. No method can fully protect you. Get medical help at once for a fever during or after the trip. Tell the doctor where you have been.
CDC's Tanzania travel-health page also advises planning medicines and access to care. Bring needed prescriptions in their labelled packaging, carry support details and ask the right office if you can bring each drug into the country. Ask about supplies for delays and storage needs before leaving home.
For your Tanzania entry checklist, make a small health file with the names of key medicines, allergy details and insurer contacts. Share only what is needed with the right people. Your trip planner can help with travel needs. Your doctor should guide your care.
A practical timeline for your Tanzania entry checklist
As soon as you choose the trip
Check each passport and the right visa category. Review any referral rule before paying for travel you cannot refund. Book a travel-health consultation and send the doctor your full route, with transit stops and any mountain or beach extension.
Ask your planner for a clear arrival sequence. Mark the first point where you enter, your first lodge and all flight dates. Keep one current trip plan, so old drafts do not lead to mismatched forms.
Once the itinerary is confirmed
Fill in the forms you need through the linked state services. Read each visa grant when it comes. Ask the office that issued it to fix any error. Confirm the right inbound insurer, then review your own travel policy for the activities you have booked.
Build your Tanzania entry checklist folder on your phone and keep a backup. Keep private papers in a safe place. Save support contacts separately, in case you cannot open a policy file when you need help.
Close to departure and at arrival
Recheck the latest health notices. Fill in the right health form and have all your travel documents ready. Read any message from the airline about the papers you need. Check the arrival date shown in local time, especially on an overnight flight.
At check-in and the border, answer questions accurately and present the requested records. Read the entry permit you receive. If a date or detail looks wrong, ask the officer before leaving the control area.
Budget for entry costs separately from your safari
As a simple mainland example, an eligible visitor paying a US$50 ordinary visa fee plus the US$44-equivalent NIC premium would budget US$94 for those two items. A US tourist paying US$100 for the visa plus that premium would budget US$144.
These examples apply only when both charges are due. They exclude other travel costs, optional services and any payment-related charges. Confirm your own status and final payable amounts. Do not add two mandatory insurance premiums solely for a mainland-and-island holiday.
Your Tanzania entry checklist budget should also allow for clinic appointments, any needed vaccines or medicines and travel cover that meets your needs. Ask what your safari quote includes. Never assume that a package price automatically settles a guest's visa or insurance obligations.
Sample packages to plan around your arrival
These are suggested private routes to discuss with TanzaLux Safaris. They are sample ideas to tailor, subject to space and a quote. Final camps, transport and prices depend on your dates and a written quote. Work through the Tanzania entry checklist for your own passport and routing before travel.
Sample package: 7-day Northern Safari from Arusha
Best for: a focused mainland safari with an arrival night before game drives.
Day 1: arrive via the agreed mainland airport and transfer to Arusha. Overnight Arusha.
Day 2: explore Tarangire. Overnight in the Tarangire area.
Day 3: travel to central Serengeti. Overnight Serengeti.
Day 4: enjoy a full day based in Serengeti. Overnight at the same camp.
Day 5: enjoy planned viewing before the transfer to the Ngorongoro area. Overnight near the crater.
Day 6: take a crater descent, then travel to Arusha. Overnight Arusha.
Day 7: depart or begin a separately arranged extension.
The plan has six nights and includes some long road travel. Ask for more Serengeti nights if you prefer a slower pace. Confirm the arrival airport before selecting the mainland insurance route.
Request a northern safari with a clear arrival plan and a comfortable first night.
Sample package: 10-day Safari and Zanzibar, Mainland First
Best for: guests who want wildlife followed by time at the coast.
Day 1: arrive on the mainland. Overnight Arusha.
Day 2: enjoy Tarangire. Overnight in the Tarangire area.
Days 3–5: travel to Serengeti, then explore from one base. Overnight Serengeti on all three nights.
Day 6: fly to Zanzibar on flights booked for your dates and transfer to the coast. Overnight Zanzibar.
Days 7–9: enjoy a beach stay with optional trips booked in advance. Overnight Zanzibar on all three nights.
Day 10: transfer to the airport for your flight home.
This plan has nine nights. Keep the right proof of cover ready for both parts of the journey. Your Tanzania entry checklist must also include the right island health guide and the agreed flight details.
Sample package: 9-day Zanzibar and Safari, Island First
Best for: guests whose international route lands in Zanzibar before the mainland safari.
Day 1: arrive in Zanzibar. Overnight Zanzibar.
Days 2–3: settle into the island stay. Overnight Zanzibar on both nights.
Day 4: fly to Arusha on flights booked for your dates. Overnight Arusha.
Day 5: travel to Tarangire for a game drive. Overnight in that area.
Day 6: transfer to central Serengeti. Overnight Serengeti.
Day 7: explore from your camp. Overnight Serengeti.
Day 8: fly to Arusha and rest. Overnight Arusha.
Day 9: depart from the agreed airport.
The eight nights include three in Zanzibar. Because the island is the first international entry point, check the ZIC route when arranging required cover. Flight schedules and your wider journey may require adjustments or an extra night.
Compare these sample packages and build a safari-and-beach route around your actual flights.

Frequently asked questions
1. Does every visitor need a Tanzania visa?
No. It depends on your passport and why you will visit. Read the visa rules for your own case. Do not assume that a friend's right to enter applies to you.
2. How long should my passport be valid?
Plan for at least six months from the day you enter and one blank visa page. Check the rules when you apply too. Renew the passport first if needed.
3. What visa do US tourists normally need?
US tourists are directed to the multiple-entry visa, with a listed fee of US$100. Check the visa type on the state portal. This rule also applies to a trip with just one arrival.
4. Is a visa payment receipt enough to travel?
A receipt shows that you paid. It does not show that the visa was granted. Track your case and get the grant notice where needed. Ask the visa office if it is still pending.
5. Do children need separate visa applications?
Each passport holder who needs a visa must have a form of their own. Include children from the start. Check with the airline and visa office about consent papers for the child's trip.
6. Can referral travellers use visa on arrival?
They need the right advance clearance. Allow at least two months as advised by the visa office. Wait for the grant before paying for travel you cannot refund.
7. Is there a separate Zanzibar tourist visa?
The right Tanzania visa can cover a trip to both the mainland and Zanzibar. Keep the same passport and visa ready. Check the island's health forms and cover rules as well.
8. Is mainland inbound insurance mandatory in 2026?
The mainland rule began on 1 October 2026 for guests within its scope. NIC is the named firm. Check if an exemption applies and note where you first enter the country.
9. How much is NIC inbound insurance?
NIC lists a price in Tanzanian shillings equal to US$44 per person. Check the final sum with NIC. This is separate from the visa fee. Ask if your trip quote includes it.
10. Must I buy both NIC and ZIC for one trip?
Not just because the same trip includes the mainland and Zanzibar. Follow the first-entry rule. Keep valid proof of cover and ask the firm if a change of route affects it.
11. Does my personal policy remove the local requirement?
Do not assume that it does. Buy the named local cover if you need it. Read your own travel policy too. Each has terms, limits and costs it will not pay.
12. Are EAC and SADC residents exempt everywhere?
NIC lists a mainland exemption for those who qualify. It does not mean you are exempt from Zanzibar's rules. Ask the right firm to check your status and the proof you need.
13. Does 92-day insurance allow a 92-day stay?
No. Cover does not give you a right to stay. Read the visa grant and the dates allowed at entry. Put both end dates in your Tanzania entry checklist.
14. Is a health declaration still relevant in 2026?
Yes. The October rules include a health form and checks. Use the right process for the mainland or Zanzibar. Save its QR code or reference apart from your visa and proof of cover.
15. Does everyone need yellow fever vaccination?
No. Your route can make a yellow card necessary. Tell the clinic and Port Health where you have been and where you will stop. A changed flight may change the rule for you.
16. What if my yellow fever connection is around 12 hours?
The mainland health notice includes 12 hours or more in a risk country. If your stop is near that limit, ask Port Health before you fly. Keep the full flight plan.
17. How soon is a new yellow fever certificate valid?
WHO states 10 days after the first shot, with life-long validity after that. Get advice from your doctor early. Carry the recognised yellow card where needed, not just an entry in an app.
18. Can I ignore malaria prevention at a luxury lodge?
No. A good room does not remove the risk in that area. Ask a doctor what steps to take. Use bite protection and get prompt care for a fever during or after your trip.
19. What should I do if my flight route changes?
Check visa details, first-entry cover, health forms and yellow fever rules again. Ask the firm or office that issued a record to fix it if needed. Update each guest's Tanzania entry checklist.
20. Can TanzaLux arrange my entry approval?
TanzaLux can provide your agreed route and lodge details and plan your safari. State offices decide entry matters. Use the linked state sites to apply, and ask your doctor for personal health advice.
