A Tanzania safari and Zanzibar itinerary pairs wildlife with time by the Indian Ocean. This 10-day plan includes Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and an island stay.

If Jihan Dimack’s Miss Grand International 2026 win sparked your interest, explore the country behind the crown. This route shows how a first visit could fit together.

The plan is a sample to adapt to your dates. Flights, rooms, park visits and transfers need to be checked before booking. It includes travel days, so you can judge the pace as well as the highlights.

What does this Tanzania safari and Zanzibar itinerary include?

It includes five safari days, with arrival and rest time, followed by three nights on Zanzibar. Day ten is the departure day.

  • Day 1: arrive and stay in Arusha.

  • Day 2: visit Tarangire and stay near Karatu or another suitable base.

  • Days 3–4: travel to Serengeti and spend two nights there.

  • Day 5: return to the Ngorongoro highlands or Karatu area.

  • Day 6: visit the crater and return to Arusha for the night.

  • Day 7: fly to Zanzibar and stay in Stone Town.

  • Days 8–9: move to a beach hotel for two nights.

  • Day 10: transfer to the airport and depart.

That is nine nights in total. It suits travellers who want several landscapes in one trip and are happy with some long road days. For a slower pace, add nights or choose fewer stops.

How do the ten days fit together?

Each day has a clear purpose: arrive, explore, transfer or rest. Your planner should name the overnight location and expected travel time for each stage.

Day 1: arrive and settle into Arusha

Your Tanzania safari starts with an airport transfer and a night in Arusha. Keep the arrival day light and leave time to rest.

Confirm your flight’s arrival airport before arranging the pickup. Ask for the meeting point and local contact details. A short town visit may fit an early arrival, but a late flight calls for dinner and sleep.

Use the evening to meet your guide or review the plan. Check the next morning’s departure time, bags and meal arrangements. A calm first night makes an early start easier.

Day 2: explore Tarangire

Spend the day on a Tarangire game drive. The park is known for elephants, baobab trees and its river landscape.

Tanzania National Parks describes wildlife gathering around the river in the dry season. Give your guide room to follow sightings rather than chase a fixed list.

After the drive, head to a lodge chosen for the onward route. Karatu is one option to discuss. Confirm the full drive plan before booking, since the hotel’s position affects both today and tomorrow.

Day 3: travel through the highlands to Serengeti

This is a long transfer day with game viewing as the route allows. Choose a camp whose location fits the season and your available time.

Set off with packed meals if your plan requires them. Time on the road, gate arrangements and the camp’s position affect arrival. Ask your planner to explain the whole journey rather than quote only the game-drive portion.

For this Tanzania safari, two Serengeti nights work best when the camp is within a manageable route. A distant migration camp may need more days or a flight.

Day 4: enjoy a full Serengeti safari day

Give this day to wildlife viewing. Discuss your pace with the guide, then let sightings and conditions shape the outing.

You may choose a picnic day or return to camp for a break, depending on distance and meal plans. Tell your guide if you enjoy birds, big cats or long stops for photos.

The Great Migration is a moving natural event. Choose the region for your month and avoid building the whole holiday around one promised crossing. A full day gives you time to enjoy the park beyond a single sighting.

Day 5: return towards the Ngorongoro highlands

Leave Serengeti for a night near the crater or Karatu. A morning game drive can fit if the onward journey allows.

This overnight breaks up the route before the crater visit. It also gives your guide time to prepare the next day’s arrangements. Check whether your lodge is on the rim or farther away; that changes the morning drive.

Day 6: visit Ngorongoro Crater and return to Arusha

Start early for a crater game drive, then return to Arusha. Keep the night free of a tight flight connection.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area’s attraction guide describes the crater’s grasslands, swamps and woodland. It offers a different setting from the Serengeti plains.

Confirm the visit length, meals and return drive with your planner. This is a full day. A night in Arusha gives you a buffer before the flight to Zanzibar.

Day 7: fly to Zanzibar and settle into Stone Town

Take a suitable domestic flight and transfer to your hotel. Plan the first island night in Stone Town if culture is a priority.

Flights may use Arusha or Kilimanjaro, depending on the service chosen. Confirm the actual airport, departure time and baggage rules. Ask how the transfer from your Arusha hotel fits that schedule.

Leave the afternoon flexible. An early arrival may allow a gentle walk; a later one may call for dinner and rest. Keep the main guided visit for the following day.

Day 8: explore Stone Town and move to the beach

Enjoy a guided town visit before heading to your beach hotel. This separates culture time from the slower coastal stay.

UNESCO’s Stone Town listing explains its Swahili trading history and the mix of African, Arab, Indian and European influences. A local guide can add context to the streets and buildings.

Ask whether a spice visit fits the transfer route and your interests. Keep time for lunch and the hotel journey. Choose the beach hotel around the way you want to spend your final days.

Day 9: take a slower beach day

Keep one full day for the coast. You can rest at the hotel or book an activity that suits local conditions.

Boat trips and snorkelling may be options through local providers. Ask about tides, weather, travel time and what the price includes. If your main goal is rest, a clear day with few plans may be the best choice.

Day 10: depart from Zanzibar

Arrange an airport transfer with enough time for check-in. Check the onward route before you book the final hotel night.

If your international flight leaves from mainland Tanzania, include that extra flight or transfer in the plan. Do not treat the final day as a full beach day unless the flight time supports it.

When is a good time for a Tanzania safari and beach trip?

Choose dates around your main wish, then check the whole route. Wildlife seasons and island plans may call for different trade-offs.

The TANAPA planning guide highlights June to October as the dry season. It describes short rains around November and December and longer rains from March to May.

Rain can affect tracks and lodge access. Ask about conditions for your exact camps and beach hotel. If migration viewing is the priority, camp location matters as much as the month.

What will your Tanzania safari and Zanzibar holiday cost?

The price depends on dates, group size, rooms and transport. Request an itemised quote for the full journey.

Compare your Tanzania safari quote by what it includes, as well as the total price. A cheaper room far from the route may add drive time. A flight may save road time while adding cost.

  • Safari: vehicle, guide, park entry and conservation charges, including the crater visit.

  • Stays: hotel or camp names, room type and meal plan.

  • Flights: domestic routes, baggage allowance and any booking conditions.

  • Transfers: airport pickups and journeys between island hotels.

  • Extras: tours, drinks, tips and meals outside the included plan.

  • Separate costs: international flights, visa needs and applicable insurance.

Ask for the payment schedule and cancellation terms before confirming. Check whether a quote is per person or for the whole group, and whether all travellers share the same room plan.

What should you pack for a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar stay?

Pack for game drives, cooler mornings and time by the sea. Check flight bag limits before choosing your luggage.

  • Light clothes, a warm layer and a rain layer.

  • A hat, sunglasses and sun protection.

  • Comfortable shoes for walks and beach footwear.

  • A camera, binoculars and charging items.

  • Travel documents and copies of confirmed bookings.

Our fly-in safari guide discusses luggage on small aircraft. Exact limits depend on the chosen flight. Ask whether camera gear counts within the allowance and whether a soft bag is required.

What entry documents should you check?

Check passport, visa and applicable inbound insurance requirements for your nationality and first arrival point. Use current official guidance before departure.

Start with Tanzania Immigration for visa and travel-document rules. Do not assume every nationality has the same process.

The official insurance clarification of 7 October 2026 explains first-entry rules, exemptions and travel between mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Check which rules apply to you and retain the required certificate.

How can you adapt this route?

Add nights where your main interest lies. If your time is fixed, choose fewer stops or discuss flying a long section.

To extend the Tanzania safari portion, add a Serengeti night before the return journey. To slow down on Zanzibar, add a beach night or a second town night. Both change the total trip length.

For a shorter trip, explore our 3-Day Private Serengeti Fly-In & Fly-Out Safari from Zanzibar. That is a different route, focused on Serengeti and the beach. Flights and availability still need confirmation for your dates.

A Kilimanjaro climb needs a separate schedule. Decide on the mountain route first, then add safari and island days around it.

15 FAQs about planning a safari and Zanzibar holiday

These answers help you check the pace, costs and practical details before you request a personalised route.

1. What does a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar itinerary combine?

It combines mainland wildlife viewing with an island stay. This sample also includes Stone Town, so you get culture as well as park and beach time.

2. Is ten days enough for a first Tanzania safari and beach trip?

Ten days can suit this focused route. Count arrival, transfer and departure days. Add nights if you want more game drives or a longer beach finish.

3. How many Serengeti nights does this plan include?

It includes two Serengeti nights and one full safari day. The arrival and departure days may also include game viewing, depending on the route.

4. When should I book a Tanzania safari?

Ask about rooms and flights once your dates are clear. Booking earlier gives more scope to match camp location and room needs, especially for popular travel periods.

5. Can I book a guaranteed migration crossing?

No. Herds move with conditions, and crossings have no fixed timetable. Plan the region for your dates and allow enough time to enjoy other wildlife too.

6. Which airport should I arrive at?

Choose the airport after agreeing the route. Ask your planner to name the arrival airport, pickup plan and first hotel before you buy international flights.

7. Is the Zanzibar flight included in this sample?

The sample includes a flight day. It does not confirm a ticket or price. Your quote should name the domestic flight and say whether its fare is included.

8. Could I fly from Serengeti to Zanzibar instead?

A fly-in version may suit your dates and budget. It changes the route, especially the planned crater visit. Ask about flight schedules, camp access and what you would miss.

9. How can I compare Tanzania safari quotes fairly?

Compare the same nights, room types, park visits and transport. Check meals, transfers, fees and extras. A clear list makes the total easier to assess.

10. Are park and crater charges included?

That depends on the quote. Ask for written confirmation of every planned park and conservation charge, including the crater visit and any extra activities.

11. Can I visit Stone Town and stay at the beach?

Yes. This route uses one town night and two beach nights. Allow time for the hotel transfer so it does not consume your planned beach day.

12. Can families use this itinerary?

The route can be adapted to a family’s pace. Share children’s ages, room needs and tolerance for long drives. Confirm camp and activity policies before booking.

13. Can I bring a large suitcase on a Tanzania safari?

Ask before packing. Vehicle space and flight limits affect the choice. If small aircraft are included, confirm bag type and the total allowance for your route.

14. Do I need a visa and inbound insurance?

Check current rules for your nationality and first entry point. Visa and insurance requirements are separate. Use the official guidance linked above to confirm what applies.

15. Can I add Kilimanjaro within the same ten days?

A full climb needs its own plan and enough days. Add trip time or redesign the route. A view or day visit is a different experience from a summit trek.
