Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak, standing at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), and offers an incredible trekking experience for those seeking adventure with stunning views, diverse wildlife, and lush landscapes. Located in Arusha National Park, just 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru is often considered a less crowded, more accessible alternative to its famous neighbor, providing an equally rewarding challenge.
Trekking Route:
The Mount Meru trek usually takes about 4 to 5 days, with the following general route:
Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (2,514 meters / 8,250 feet)
Start your trek through lush forest, spotting wildlife along the way.
The ascent is gradual, offering beautiful views of the surrounding area.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3,570 meters / 11,710 feet)
Trek through the forest and up into the alpine zone, where the terrain starts to change.
Stunning views of the volcanic crater and surrounding peaks begin to unfold.
Day 3: Saddle Hut to Summit and Descent (4,566 meters / 14,980 feet)
A challenging early morning ascent to the summit, with stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Rift Valley.
After reaching the summit, descend back to Saddle Hut for rest.
Day 4: Saddle Hut to Miriakamba Hut and Down to Momella Gate
Continue descending through lush forest back to Miriakamba Hut and ultimately to Momella Gate, where you’ll complete your trek.
Best Time to Trek Mount Meru:
June to October (Dry Season): Ideal for clear views and optimal trekking conditions. The weather is cooler, and the trails are dry, making for a more comfortable experience.
January to February: A great time for trekking, with clear skies and a quiet atmosphere before the peak season starts.

Clear skies and cooler temperatures make it the best time for trekking.
Dry trails provide better trekking conditions and greater visibility of the landscape, including stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
This is the peak trekking season, so you can expect more trekkers, but also better services and weather.
✅ January to February (Short Dry Season)
This is another excellent time to trek, with mild weather, clear skies, and fewer crowds than during the main dry season.
The temperatures are comfortable, making it an ideal time for a more peaceful trek.
Best Overall Months:
June–October for optimal weather conditions, clear skies, and the best trekking experience.
January–February for a quieter, equally pleasant trek with fewer tourists.
