The Great Migration

Witness millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles traverse the sweeping Serengeti plains in an awe, inspiring annual journey

What is the Great Migration ?

The Great Migration is one of nature’s most extraordinary wildlife spectacles and a defining highlight of any Tanzania safari. Each year, over a million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, embark on a timeless circular trek across the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water. This never-ending journey sweeps through southern, central, and northern Serengeti plains and into Kenya’s Maasai Mara, offering dramatic wildlife encounters that captivate travelers and photographers from around the world.

Why It’s Special

What makes the Great Migration so remarkable isn’t just the sheer number of animals — it’s the story of survival and instinct. The herds move together, driven by seasonal rains and shifting pastures, creating scenes of flowing wildlife that stretch for miles. Along the way, predators like lions, leopards, hyenas, and crocodiles follow closely, creating powerful, unforgettable moments of life and challenge on the savanna.

How the Migration Works

The Great Migration is not a single event but a year-round cycle of movement that roughly follows the seasonal rains:

the herds are typically in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains, where vast numbers of wildebeest give birth — a dramatic calving season filled with newborns and predator activity.

animals begin moving through the central and western Serengeti, following fresh grasses and water.

the herds reach the northern Serengeti, with many crossing the legendary Mara River — moments many safari travelers consider the pinnacle of the migration experience.

the herds start their southward journey back toward the southern plains, completing the circle.

When to Visit,
Migration Highlights

Planning your safari depends on what you most want to see:

Calving Season (Dec–Mar)

This is a deeply moving time on the southern plains, where thousands of wildebeest calves are born within a few weeks. It’s a high-energy period with lots of predator and prey interaction.

Mid-Journey & River Crossings (Apr–Oct)

As the herds trek northward:

April–June: Wide open plains and scattered herds in central and western areas.

July–Oct: The famous Mara River crossings — dramatic, sometimes perilous crossings as crocodiles lurk and currents test the herds.
